Classification of Bet Types in Nigerian Bookmakers

Sports betting can be classified according to different parameters, and many bettors rely on leading football betting sites in Nigeria to access a variety of markets and bet types:

  • Number of markets within a betting slip, terms of adding and settling bets — singles, accumulators (parlays), systems, and other less common multiple types.
  • Timing of placing bets — pre-match (prior to the event commencement) and live (during the event).
  • Types of event outcomes in the ticket — win/draw/lose, both teams to score, shots on goal, red cards, etc. Markets are also divided conditionally into simple bets (e.g., "Will there be a goal? – Yes") and combined bets (e.g., "The team will lose the first half but win the game").

Long-term bets are in a category of their own. On Nigerian sports betting sites, they typically are under a tab titled "Outrights."

Rules for Single and Combined Types of Sports Bets

Every bookmaker in Nigeria has three main types of betting slips — singles, systems, and accumulators. It is necessary to understand rules for placing and settling each type and winning and losing conditions.

Singles

A single bet is placed on one event. For example, betting on a halftime draw or correct score. When the bet is won, the bettor receives the stake multiplied by the market odds.

Example: A bettor places a bet of ₦150 on Team 1 winning at odds of 3.00. When Team 1 wins, the bettor receives ₦450 (₦150 × 3.00). When Team 2 wins, the bookie keeps the ₦150 stake.

Financial calculations are automated. Possible returns are displayed immediately a market is added to the slip. The same goes for multiple and newer bet types.

Accumulators (Parlays)

An accumulator bet is two or more separate events combined in one bet. For example, you are not allowed to bet for Team 1 and Team 2 winning in one accumulator. The minimum and usual maximum number of markets in an accumulator is 2 and 20, respectively.

Rules for settlement:

  • Loss in any market means loss of the whole bet;
  • If all markets win, they are all multiplied together and further multiplied by the stake to calculate overall winnings.

Example: A ₦200 stake bet slip contains two bets — Team 1 to win (odds 1.50) and Team 2 to win (odds 2.00).

  • If Team 1 or Team 2 lose, the bettor loses ₦200;
  • If both teams win, the bettor receives ₦600 (₦200 × 1.50 × 2.00).

Higher stakes like accumulators yield more but are riskier. Two ₦100 singles on those markets, for example, would pay a combined ₦350 (₦150 + ₦200) with less risk than an accumulator where losing one means losing all.

Systems

Accumulators consist of two or more singles. Systems consist of three or more accumulators (usually up to 10-20) of the same number of singles. In a system bet, you specify the number of markets in total and the system size (e.g., 2/4, 4/5). For instance, in a 3/4 system, there would be 4 accumulators and 3 of the markets need to be won to get a return.

Settling rules:

  • Losing one market does not mean losing the entire bet;
  • The stake is divided equally between all accumulators;
  • Winnings are the total of all winning accumulators, settled under normal rules.

As for all other bet types, possible winnings are worked out and shown immediately on the betting slip.

Example: A 3/4 system bet is placed with a stake of ₦100, which consists of 4 accumulators at odds 2.00, 2.60, 2.14, and 1.60. There are 3 singles in each accumulator, and each accumulator has a stake of ₦25.

If markets with odds 2.00, 2.14, and 1.60 win, the payout is ₦171 ((2.00 × 2.14 × 1.60) × ₦25). The net win is ₦71.

If all four accumulators were placed singly, total winnings would be higher, but if the market with odds 2.60 is lost, all four accumulators would be lost.

Singles, Systems, and Accumulators — A Comparison

A comparison of the most popular multiple bet types:

  • Systems, with the same stake and markets as accumulators, offer lower potential returns but are less risky;
  • Accumulators offer higher potential returns but with a higher risk of losing everything.

For example, if all four markets in our system win, the payout is ₦880 (sum of all four accumulators’ winnings).

If placed as one accumulator, the payout would be ₦1,780 (₦100 × 2.00 × 2.14 × 1.60 × 2.60) — significantly higher but without the safety net that a system provides.

Four singles of ₦25 each would give ₦208 return if all win, and ₦143 if the 2.60 odds market loses, compared with ₦171 payment in the system.
